... but united we will win ...
In the rich and vast panorama of popular music, the genre of social protest and the struggle of the masses songs, Leon Chavez Teixeriro is without a doubt one of the most faithful and important composer/singer/artist of the life and struggle of the Mexican people.
Self taught by his own definition, a "commoner", a rebel, who felt privileged to be a witness to the violent social turbulence and inferno that was 1968; and who then chronicled, in brilliant verse and song this crucial period in the recent history of Mexico.. " the Fatherland is not THE MASTER, the Fatherland is not the JUDGE, ..., the Fatherland is the children, the Fatherland is you, the Fatherland is the hate, the hate of the oppressor", (a line in his song. Come Friend (Amigo Ven)). Leon Chavez Teixeiro is one of those rare and dignified men who never sold out, and who traveled down his own unique path of freedom, painting, composing, singing and giving testimony about what he knew best, the struggle of the working class life.

With the provocative themes and revolutionary rhythms -not easily assimilated or accepted, especially in these days of social turmoil that grip the nations, allowing each nation to examine and critique the rest of the world. Leon Chavez, armed with his weapons of word and song, confronted the hard and painful themes of life in Mexico directly, straight on, without equivocation, about the class struggles gripping the world.
Leon Chavez, ever- vigilant, never co-opted by popular trend or fiat, in the 60's and70's, continued to write songs about the social and political movements of the day -a mandatory component of art, and a vital instrument for the masses; themes related to the urban masses and their plight, and their daily repression, at all levels of suffering of the residents of Mexico City: "the flayed city", whose urban profile is xeroxed in San Salvador; Santiago, Chile; Tijuana; Los Angeles and Oxnard, a universal urban theme: cities where the contrasts of the struggles of repression and resistance play out.
The themes of Leon Chavez echo, powerfully, today in places where there remains a grain of dignity and indignation, before the oppressor, the exploitation and savagery of unbridled capitalism.
Those of us who have heard at least one of his compositions, and are moved by his unique and highly personal interpretation, and whose songs have been performed by many artists throughout the world are witnesses to the genius of Leon Chavez, a true artist and comrade of the working class, and whose artistic creations have a profound and universal message of love for the children, for the family, for the neighborhood, and his beloved leftist Mexican comrades..
Fausto Arrelin, a member of the musical group Qual described Leon this way.:
