INTRODUCTION

MUJERES
de

MAIZ

Mujeres de Maiz (women of corn), is a collective of women artists from throughout the nation. Like the many colors of corn, we are a diverse network of women who work to effectively communicate the spirit of our creativity through visual and performing arts in our local communities and cultural educational events/conferences.

Beginning in 1997, Mujeres de Maiz united inter-generational Chicana/Latina artists for a one-night exhibit and performance event. The response was overwhelmingly positive and as a result a total of four events were organized in that same year. A grassroots poetry & arts magazine or ‘zine’ began its's first of many and a one-year anniversary documentary on Mujeres de Maiz was produced.

Since its birth, Mujeres de Maiz continues as a growing network/organization due to the empowering feeling of women's voices and images....

The following artists have exhibited and performed
in previous Mujeres de Maiz events:

Visual Artists:
Yreina
Cervantes, Alma Lopez,
Yolanda Gonzalez, Sandra de la Loza,
Diane Gamboa,
and Margaret Sosa

Performers:
Paulina Sahagun, Marisela Norte,
Martha Gonzalez
from Quetzal, Marisol Torres from Chusma,
Raquel Salinas, In Lak Ech,
and Candela.
