This video consists of three segments that were taken sequentially and spliced together. Other than the transitions between segments and ... all » conversion to a more compressed format, they are unedited.
The first and longest segment starts with a view of demonstrators fleeing up Alvarado Street along the Eastern edge of MacArthur park toward Sixth Street as police fire rubber bullets into their midst. The camera then pans to the East sidewalk, where other demonstrators, including a man in a wheelchair, and a mother and her two small children, are fleeing northward toward Sixth street. The children in particular are right at the level where the bullets are being bounced along the sidewalk by the police. The camera at this point is sometimes pointed toward the sidewalk, but tilts upward from time to time.
In the second, very short, segment the camera pans from the sidewalk back across the street to where the police line is advancing far down the street.
The third and last segment is taken from Sixth and Alvarado, where the demonstrators have stopped for a moment to look back toward the advancing line of police. A conversation can be heard regarding the use of rubber bullets by the police, including the report of a rubber bullet being seen skittering along the sidewalk where all of the people seen in the first segment had been.
This attack came at the end of a day of peaceful marches and demonstrations in support of the reform of U.S. immigration laws. A small group entirely outside the park (where the final rally of the day had nearly ended) staged some kind of a minor altercation with police, at which point police ordered the thousands of people still in the park to leave and then fired on them with rubber bullets, hit them with batons and exploded tear gas grenades as they fled.
These events of May 1st have been covered extensively on CNN and other media, but this particular video was taken by the person posting to this site, and has not been previously seen.
