The rights of immigrants, people living with HIV and AIDS, the transgender community and individuals imprisoned or detained have been ignored in this tragic circumstance. Join us in supporting the rights of all individuals to fair and humane treatment. For further information contact Coral Lopez at clopez@bienestar.org or Fredy Ceja at fceja@bienestar.org.
On July 20, Victoria Arellano, a Latina Transgender woman who was living with HIV died after being denied medical attention at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in San Pedro. According to a report in LA OPINION, medical attention to Victoria came too late and only after her cell-mates organized a protest and demanded she receive medical care. Her requests for help were ignored by detention center employees for two months. The negligence exhibited by Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities allowed a transgender Latina immigrant to die, when providing her with basic medical services could have saved her life.
